The population of the country is increasing day by day but the generation and transmission of electricity have not increased proportionately. The present Indian power sector lacks the adequate power demand. This is the reason why we are facing power cuts today. There is a lot of need for the generation of electricity. This can be done by installing a number of electricity generation stations which will give rise to the increased employment opportunities for electrical engineers.

Since the population has been increasing, there is a lot of scope for the establishment of new power stations. It is apt to say that electrical engineer is the evergreen course in terms of employment opportunities.

The recruitment for all the Power Station Units like NTPC, NHPC, HPCL, BHEL, Power Grid etc., is done through GATE . Here is the list of power station units which conduct recruitment under GATE:-

  • National Thermal Power Corporation conducts recruitment for the position of Executive Trainees.
  • National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) recruits Trainee engineers.
  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) conducts recruitment for Graduate Engineers.
  • The Power Grid and Central Transmission Utility conducts recruitment for Executive Trainees.
  • Heavy engineering Corporation Limited recruits Executive Trainees.

There are various industries and companies which have a demand for electrical engineers. The above mentioned are top recruiters for electrical engineering in India. For organizations like Indian Railways, Coal India Limited, ISRO, NDMC and others the recruitment is conducted based on a written test and interview.

How to become an Electrical Engineer?

To become an electrical engineer a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is mandatory. The course is being offered at various Universities and Engineering colleges across India. The duration, of course, is four years. After the completion of the course, the students can pursue Masters in Electrical Engineering, the duration of which is two years. The admission process for Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is conducted based on the score secured in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) examination which is conducted at an all India level every year. All the states also conduct separate entrance tests for admission into engineering courses every year.

Skills Required:-

To become an electrical engineer, one must have knowledge about subjects such as Maths and Science right from the high school level. The students who are aspiring for a career in electrical engineering must be proficient in technical drawings. So, the students must start their preparation from high school level itself.

Typical Salary for an Electrical Engineer:-

The salary is completely based on the skills and knowledge of the candidate. The basic pay that is offered by most of the private companies ranges from Rs. 2,50,000 to Rs. 5,00,000 per annum . The person with exceptional communication and math skills will be getting higher packages.

The candidates who wish to go to the higher positions have to invest time and energy in doing research related activities in the field as well as acquire training and additional skills. In India, the career growth for electrical engineering is splendid. Some of the electrical engineers even get qualified to attain management positions, supervising a team of engineers or technicians, engineering managers or program managers and much more.
