  • Review of different theories – behavioural, structural, and social concepts. What is cognition?
  • Views of Jean Piaget on children’s thinking, construction of knowledge, schema, assimilation, accommodation, organization, and equilibration.
  • Characteristics of adolescent thinking: what is a mental operation, the development of thinking from early childhood to adolescence and its stages, the sensory stage, the functional stage, the pre-operational stage, the concrete operational stage, and the formal operational stage.
  • Educational importance of Piaget’s theories.
  • Lev Vygotsky’s theory, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), and the role of teachers in scaffolding.
  • Child as a problem solver and a scientific investigator.
  • Alternative conceptions of learning in children, understanding children’s errors as significant steps in the learning process.
  • Motivation and learning.

Unit 4: Children with Special Needs
  • Children with special needs – meaning, defect, damage, disability, similarity & differences, and working with differently-abled children. Knowledge and curriculum – need of curriculum, concept of curriculum, concept of syllabus, problems in learning, curriculum, criteria for the selection of curriculum.
  • Right to Education Act-2009, role and responsibilities of teachers, child rights.
