Understanding GATE syllabus & weightage

The GATE 2026 syllabus will set the tone for all the subjects that will be taught in the exam. Hence, you must always study directly from the syllabus. You must also be familiar with the comprehensive weightage of the GATE 2026 chapters. Weightage chapter-wise will help you recognize key topics from the syllabus and accordingly organize your studies. You would like to study more for topics having greater weightage.

Dedicate relevant time to each subject

While preparing a study plan, you should dedicate particular hours to each section of the syllabus. For example, generally, 80-90 hours of studies are required to complete the General Aptitude syllabus. Similarly, you should at least dedicate 100 hours to the Engineering Mathematics sections. You can manage your studies by dividing time across months and weeks and making a detailed study plan. This practice will also help you identify your strong and weak areas.

Make a comprehensive study plan

A well-defined study plan is extremely important for GATE 2026 preparation. If you are planning to get a double-digit rank in GATE 2026, you should make a study plan that covers all the important topics, gives time to revisions, and includes practice sessions. One expert tip that you can make use of is, that while making a study plan, you should first target your weak areas and for the first 6 months, you should focus on completing the syllabus and in-depth study. The remaining time can be utilized in complete revisions and attempting full length GATE 2026 mock test .

Create study notes

It is always a good habit to make short, crisp notes while studying or attending lectures. Short notes will help you remember concepts clearly. However, you should avoid making lengthy, exhaustive notes. Instead, you should make short notes or simply use bookmarks to remember important points.

Practice study material

During your GATE 2026 exam preparation, you should study from quality study materials. You should attempt the GATE previous year question papers , mock tests, and question banks. Additionally, to prepare, you should study from lecture notes, coaching notes, and reputable books. However, it is important not to indulge in too many sources, and only stick to the books that cater to the GATE syllabus.

Plan revisions

Finally, your exam preparation strategy must include a revision plan. You must weekly revise all the important concepts that you have studied. Additionally, you should dedicate particular time to revising important concepts and the most frequently asked questions. One expert tip that can be useful is that while solving GATE 2026 practice questions, you should mark questions that you were not able to solve in one go, and during revisions, you should practice these questions multiple times.

If you are a Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) graduate appearing for GATE in Electronics and Communication (EC) paper, you may face challenges in PSU hiring, since there are specific eligibility for the qualifying degree branch. For example, PSUs like NTPC, BHEL, Power Grid, and NPCIL only accept graduates in BE/B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE). Graduates in ECS may qualify for CS/IT-focused PSUs through CS paper instead. However, recruitment to certain PSUs like ONGC, IOCL will be done through GATE 2026 only.
