Find out the complete process of how to register as a nutritionist in India and become a recognized Registered Dietitian through IDA.
How to Get Registered as a Nutritionist in India

So you've got your nutrition degree and are wondering how to register as a nutritionist in India officially, right? Well, here's the thing - unlike doctors or nurses, nutritionists in India don't have one mandatory registration that everyone must do. But this registration with professional bodies like the Indian Dietetic Association (IDA) makes you more credible and trusted by clients and hospitals. The most recognized registration is, of course, becoming a Registered Dietitian (RD) through IDA, which requires you to complete your master's degree, do a 6-month internship, and pass their entrance examination.

Steps to Register as a Nutritionist in India

Check here all the steps to register as a nutritionist in India:

Step 1: Complete Your Education

To begin with, one needs to possess the appropriate qualification. A graduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics is essential, or its equivalent with at least three nutrition-related subjects such as Human Physiology, Nutritional Biochemistry, and Clinical Nutrition, from a UGC-recognized university. After completing the bachelor's program, you must enroll in a postgraduate program or PG Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics. It is very important to take note of the UGC recognition of colleges since this will be considered when applying for registration.

Step 2: Do Your Internship

Post-completing your master's degree, the next hurdle would be a compulsory six-month internship in a hospital. This internship is crucial since it is the actual practical component that would expose you to direct hands-on experience dealing with patients. You will learn to handle a variety of case scenarios, develop diet plans, and interact with the doctors. Ensure the hospital where the internship begins is one recognized by IDA; the complete list appears on their website. Keep all the certificates from the internship and experience letters safely because you might need them later.

Step 3: Register on IDA Website

Now comes the real registration part where you need to visit the IDA official website and register yourself with an account using username and password. Registration is done completely online now which eases a lot of things. You have to provide all personal details, educational details and other facts related to the internship. Keep your documents ready - degree certificates, mark sheets, certificate of internship completion, and passport-size photographs. Upload all asked documents clearly because any unclear document may lead to rejection of the application.

Step 4: Apply for RD Exam

As soon as you register on the website, you need to download the RD exam application form and proceed to fill it up. The application form is usually available from the 15th of February every year. The exam fee is to be paid online. Make sure to check every information you've put in because you won't be able to change it very easily after submission. It tests knowledge concerning clinical nutrition, community nutrition, food science, and diet therapy. It is a highly competitive exam, and hence initiates preparation early because you are to score much in passing.

Step 5: Clear the RD Exam

The RD examination is conducted annually in the month of November. It is a written examination encompassing a comprehensive assessment of everything learned in the course and internship. Revise all the subjects rigorously, with more emphasis on clinical cases, and practice solving last year's papers if you can find them. Once you pass this exam, you're almost there! The results usually come out within a few months after the exam.

Step 6: Get Your RD Number

Once you have passed the RD examination, you will receive the Registered Dietitian number from IDA. This is akin to your professional license number establishing you as a fully qualified and registered dietitian. You can now officially brand yourself as a Registered Dietitian and write RD after your name. Maintain this number safely for mention on your visiting cards, prescriptions, and professional profiles. You will also have to renew your membership with IDA annually by paying the annual fee.

Step 7: Join Professional Bodies (Optional but Helpful)

You may join other bodies such as the Nutrition Society of India or the Indian Public Health Association in addition to the IDA. Memberships give you access to workshops, conferences, and networking opportunities with other professionals. It's not mandatory, but it helps you stay updated with new research and connect with people in your field. Some employers also prefer candidates who are members of multiple professional bodies.

To be a nutritionist in India means getting your RD certification from IDA after completing your education, doing an internship, and passing their examination. Although it is not an obligatory certification to practice, registrations offer an advantage for work in hospitals, clinics, and private practice. The whole process takes time and effort, but once you're registered, you'll have much better credibility and career opportunities in the nutrition field.

Are you feeling lost and unsure about what career path to take after completing 12th standard?

Say goodbye to confusion and hello to a bright future!
