How to Prepare for Group Discussion at NMIMS MBA Interview?

NMIMS, or Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, is one of the premier management institutes in India, and every year, thousands of aspirants apply for MBA admission at this institute. Naturally, in order to secure admission, you have to excel in all parts of the admission process. The group discussion is part of the second stage of the MBA admission process at NMIMS, and it is called a Case Discussion. Similar to MBA group discussions, the Case Discussion round is a group of 12-15 participants, typically engaging with 3 panellists during a discussion on a business-related topic that lasts about 15-25 minutes.

Preparation Tips for Group Discussion at NMIMS MBA Interview

During a Group Discussion round of an MBA selection process, several things can go wrong due to the presence of so many participants. You should check out the tips mentioned below to address different types of issues you may encounter during an MBA GD round at NMIMS:

Problems During NMIMS MBA Group Discussion

Solutions/ Tips to Overcome

Beginning the Group Discussion

Prepare 2-3 crisp opening lines (facts, a quote, or a definition). Volunteer early, but don’t rush. If someone starts before you, jump in right after with a supporting point.

Nervousness or hesitation to speak

Take deep breaths before speaking, focus on one point at a time, and make eye contact. Start by agreeing/ disagreeing with someone’s point instead of initiating.

Other participants being dominant

Politely interrupt with phrases like “Let me add to that point” or “I’d like to present a different perspective”. Stay calm but assertive.

Fear of being wrong

Stick to logical reasoning, use simple examples, and if unsure, phrase it as “One possible way to see this is…”. Avoid overcomplicating.

Running out of points

Support others’ views by adding evidence, examples, or counterpoints. Paraphrase and extend discussions instead of repeating.

Too many participants speaking at once

Raise your hand slightly, lean in, and start with a clear phrase like “Building on what X said…”. Timing is key - enter when there’s a small pause.

Getting Interrupted

Don’t stop abruptly - say “Just let me complete this point”. Keep your statement concise to hold attention.

Long Intervals/ Pauses

Aim to contribute 3-4 times in the GD. Even short, relevant inputs show participation. Use data, examples, or summaries.

Unfamiliar Topics

Listen actively, note down key points, and build on others’ inputs. Use generic frameworks like pros-cons, causes-effects, or social-economic angles.

Struggling to Conclude

Summarize briefly: highlight main arguments (for & against), and close with a balanced statement. Don’t introduce new points in the conclusion.

Major Changes in NMIMS MBA Selection Criteria

This year, NMIMS has decided to allocate more weight to the competency test than NMAT exam scores for MBA admission 2025. Typically, NMIMS Mumbai had a cutoff of more than 232. In contrast, other campuses and programs had a cutoff between 208 and 226. Additionally, the major reduction in the NMAT score weight is a setback for many students since the weight for the NMAT score last year was 60%. Also, the competency test, which is newly introduced, will have a major weight of 50% and replace the WATSON rounds, which included the Written Ability Test, Case Discussion, and Personal Interview test put together. Lovely Professional University (LPU) does not accept XAT scores for admission. LPU primarily uses its own entrance test called LPUNEST or direct eligibility criteria based on your qualifying marks for MBA and other programs. Some courses may also consider national exams like CMAT or MAT depending on LPU’s latest admission policy, but XAT is not generally accepted for LPU admissions. Always check the current requirements.
