JEE-Main and Advanced are the most important career benchmarks for Science Students. Students scoring a rank between 2.5 Lakhs get a chance to sit for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main and Advanced; Important Career Benchmarks for Science Students

It is a common dilemma for students preparing for engineering entrance exams: Whether to write both JEE Main and JEE Advanced or just settle for the former. If both, then one needs to decide in advance so that the preparation of both goes hand in hand. These exams are interrelated but different at the same time. Scores in JEE Main exam 2023 is important in seeking admission to 4-year science and engineering degree courses of institutions like NITs, IIITs, and other national-level colleges in India. On the other hand, it is also a qualifying exam to take JEE Advanced 2023.

Let’s quickly check how the process of JEE Main and JEE Advanced work:

JEE Main 2023 is the primary Admission criteria for Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other Institutions. Paper-1 (B. E. /B. Tech.) of JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced) if a candidate aspires for admission to the undergraduate programs offered by the IITs.

Eligibility Criteria of JEE Main 2023 and JEE Advanced 2023

JEE Main eligibility criteria 2023 and JEE Advanced eligibility criteria 2023 are largely the same. But being eligible to write JEE Main and by obtaining an All India rank in JEE Main, a candidate does not automatically become eligible for admission nor becomes eligible for JEE Advanced.

Score and Result for JEE Main - 2023

I. The result of Paper-I of JEE Main 2023 is yet to be declared. This will show marks obtained in Paper-I of JEE Main 2023 and the status of those who qualify for appearing in JEE Advanced 2023.
II. On the basis of score in JEE Main 2023 and normalized score in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weightage respectively), separate rank lists will be prepared for admission to B.E./B. Tech. and B. Arch/ B. Planning in institutions other than IITs. Institutions in the states of Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh Nagaland and Odisha take admission through JEE MAINS score.

III. Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs/SFIs/Others.

1- Language,

2- Physics,

3- Mathematics,

4- Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject),

5- Any other subject.

JEE Advanced 2023

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are institutions of national importance established through the Acts of Parliament for fostering excellence in education. Over the years, IITs have created a world-class educational platform that is dynamically sustained through quality teaching and internationally acclaimed research with excellent infrastructure and the best available minds who have continued to make a considerable impact in all sections of society.

The primary objectives of IITs and ISM are as follows:

  • To create an environment that encourages freedom of thought and pursuit of excellence, and inculcates the necessary vision and self-discipline to achieve excellence
  • To build a solid foundation of scientific and technical knowledge and to prepare competent and motivated engineers and scientists
  • To kindle an entrepreneurial spirit among the students
  • To prepare the students to become outstanding professionals and contribute to nation-building

All the candidates, including foreign nationals, must fulfill each and every one of the following five criteria to appear in JEE Advanced 2023.

Criterion 1 – Performance in JEE Main 2023

Candidates should be among the top 2,00,000 (including all categories) by scoring positive marks on Paper-1 of JEE Main 2023

Criterion 2 - Age limit

Candidates should have passed their class 12th in 2020 and 2021. Five years of relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates

Criterion 3 - Number of attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years. Therefore, candidates who appeared in JEE Advanced 2021 for the first time are also eligible.

Criterion 4 - Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination

A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in all the subjects in either 2021 or 2023.
Those appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2021 and wish to re-appear in the same in 2023 (either for improvement or because they failed in one or more subjects), must re-appear in all the subjects in 2023.

Criterion 5 – Earlier admission at IITs/ISM

A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT/ISM (irrespective of whether or not he/she continued in the program) OR even accepted the IIT/ISM seat by reporting at a reporting center in the past. The candidates whose admission at IITs or ISM was canceled are also NOT eligible.

Candidates who have been admitted to a preparatory course in any of the IITs for the first time in 2015 can appear in JEE (Advanced) 2016. The candidates who have paid the seat acceptance fee but have not accepted the seat by reporting at the reporting center during joint seat allocation in 2015 are also eligible.

Major differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced include:

Eligibility criteria of JEE Main and JEE Advanced are largely the same but, only top 2 lakh candidates of JEE-Main can take JEE-Advanced. IITs and ISM Dhanbad pick up candidates on the basis of All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Advanced.

Paper patterns of JEE Main and JEE advanced are different even though both have multiple choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

JEE-Main is conducted both in a pen-paper mode and online mode. However, JEE Advanced is conducted in pen-paper mode.

4. A candidate can take JEE-Main thrice in his/her lifetime but can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
