The student-faculty ratio at newer Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is better than the old ones. Experts state that the newer IITs have better balance as the batch size is much smaller than the old IITs. Where the ideal student-faculty ratio is considered to be 10:1, some IITs have outperformed this norm.

Talking about the reasons why the newer IITs have better student-teacher ratio, Director at Deloitte Rohin Kapoor said that planned faculty allocation, no pressure regarding an increase in intake capacity and relatively better infrastructure are some of the reasons that newer IITs are doing better regarding PTRs (pupil-teacher ratios).

In order to maintain a steady pace of development, Director of IIT Ropar , SK Das informed that the institute has increased its faculty strength by 50% within the past 18 months. The institute is also planning to hire faculty from international grounds including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, Germany, Canada, France as well as the US to improve the global institute ratings. The institute has already sent a delegation regarding a talent hunt to the Canada, UK and northern part of the US.

IIT Mandi is also planning to hire teachers from international countries. The institute has also recruited international faculty members through presentations and interviews. IIT Indore and IIT Gandhinagar are also planning to hire faculty members from international countries through presentations.

The remote location of the newer IITs often make it a challenge to recruit new faculty members but the institutes have been taking several initiatives to attract more candidates. Short-term faculty members are also being invited to teach at some of the institutes through exchange programmes.
