What After CMAT 2020

With the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) due to be conducted on January 28, 2020, all you aspirants should know the further process once the exam has been concluded. By now many of the B-schools admissions have started, and some have even closed their application process. For many of you who did not appear for the CAT exam or other major MBA Entrance Tests, this may be a last opportunity to get calls for admission in some premier B-schools based on the scores/ranks of the CMAT exam.

In fact, now that the exam has concluded, your focus should be on your B-school admission options in accordance with your CMAT percentile .

Hundreds of B-schools affiliated to AICTE accept CMAT scores for admission in the management programme. Of which some are quite good and can provide the boost to your career and may find that coveted first job of your life. Depending upon your score in the CMAT, you can shortlist and apply to B-schools which may call you for the next round of the selection process that normally include Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, Personal Interview and/or Final Selection.

The overall profile of the student is considered by the institutes while shortlisting, along with the CMAT scores. Based on the cut-offs and the selection procedure by these institutes, the students will be shortlisted for further selection process. You can find the B-schools suitable to your strengths according to the league you belong to. You should narrow down your option and target a few of the B-schools for your MBA admission as per your future goal, the area of interest and budget.

One question may definitely come to your mind once you have settled down with initial euphoria or the shock of the result: How good or how bad my result is. The answer to this question is quite subjective. These days good B-schools (barring IIMs and a few) which essentially take CAT score may give you call if your CMAT score is above 200 (98+ percentile).

The pre-admission process mostly consists of Group Discussion (GD), a Written Aptitude Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Most B-schools have a two or three-tier process of selection once a candidate reports there. While some have a Written Ability Test (WAT) and PI (Personal Interview), some have GD & PI. Some may even have Group Task or Presentation and PI. WAT or GD, may at times, serve as a filtering process for PI. None of these processes, in itself, are sufficient for selection. Separate Weightage is assigned to each of these processes and a final score sheet is prepared for the selection in any programme. Common parameters for these final scores are scores in CMAT, GD or WAT, PI, Academics, and Work experience.

Remember, a candidate with a good score may get a call but if his academic records starting from class X are not up to the mark she or he may be at some disadvantage as some profiling of the candidate may be done which normally includes academic results among other things. Also, a complex factor of sectional cut off may play a role even if one scores quite a high percentile overall.

The selection procedure and cut-offs are different for different institutes.
