Subject Expert Insights on GATE 2026 Economics High-Weightage and Low-Weightage Topics

Here are the insights shared on GATE 2026 Economics High Weightage and Low Weightage Topics by our subject expert:

CollegeDekho: What are GATE 2025 Economics High Weightage topics?

Angana Nath : According to me, the most high-weightage topics are the ones within MicroEconomics, like consumer theory, market structures, etc. From MacroEconomics, the highest weightage questions can come from the Solow Growth Model, etc. Apart from this, Statistics and Econometrics is also a high-weightage topic, and candidates can expect major questions coming from here. In the NET section within this segment, Linear Regression and Hypothesis Testing are most important.

CollegeDekho: What are GATE 2026 Economics Low Weightage topics?

Angana Nath : Low-weightage topics are mostly Development Economics, from where only one or two questions appear, and International Trade. The Indian Economy is also a low priority if the past five years' trend is considered.

CollegeDekho: Which topics in Microeconomics are guaranteed for GATE 2026?

Angana Nath : It is difficult to pinpoint which topics in Microeconomics are guaranteed for GATE 2026, but usually, topics like Consumer Theory, Market Structures are tested. Within Consumer Theory, the Slutsky Equation, Demand are important, and within Market Structures, Oligopoly models like Cournot/Stackelberg are usually important. Apart from this, some questions can also come from Game Theory and Welfare Economics.

CollegeDekho: What are the top 3 high-weightage sections in GATE Economics 2026?

Angana Nath : Overall, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Statistics/Econometrics are the most crucial sections within the syllabus, and these sections are likely to cover 70% of the questions that come in the examination. Though a change in trend can happen anytime (not likely), we should be prepared by studying the other sections as well.

CollegeDekho: How much weightage does the 'Indian Economy' section have?

Angana Nath : The Indian Economy section is likely to carry 8-10 marks. To score well in this section, candidates should focus on structural changes, recent fiscal policy trends, and not just data. It's also crucial to study trade balance, as questions can test students' knowledge on these areas.
