The Gour Banga University has recently announced that the course fees for PG programs will be reduced across all streams. This announcement comes within 24 hours after the newly appointed vice-chancellor of the university, Ashis Bhattacharjee, assumed his office on November 18, 2025. Mr Bhattarcharjee has said that the decision to revise the PG course fees is a response to the protests by the students, which broke out against the fee hike for PG courses in 2024. The university authorities in Malda have decided to carefully analyse the reasons behind the fee hike and eliminate any unnecessary charges for the PG admissions.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the new VC held a priority meeting with deans, heads of various postgraduate departments and other senior officials to discuss this matter. A follow-up meeting was also held on Thursday, November 21, 2025, with the principals of colleges affiliated to the varsity for a brief discussion on the issue. As a result, it has been decided in these meetings that the session fees for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semesters will be reduced by Rs 1,200/- per student for all lab-based and non-lab-based courses.

This means that students who are applying for PG admissions at the GBU will now have to pay only Rs 3,600/- instead of Rs 4,800/- for non-lab-based subjects. On the other hand, the lab-based subjects will now be charged an amount of Rs 5,600/- instead of Rs 6,800/-. An official notice declaring the new fee structure has been issued by the deputy registrar, Rajib Patitundi.

Based on the inputs from The Telegraph, students will have to pay the revised PG admission fee between November 24 to 26, 2025. The undergraduate results for the 2nd and 4th semesters have also been recently released, where around 98% of the students have passed the exams. The newly appointed VC of GBU, Ashis Bhattacharjee, has further expressed his ideas on resolving pending problems as soon as possible, for the best interests of students and the academic institute.
